When we ran through a shortlist of names for the Tracks Surfer of the Year award, Marky’s name was top five. Actually, top two. We had to separate he and Kelly [not physically], but it gets hard to compete against eight world titles. In the past 12 months, this free-surfing Maroubran maniac’s been barreled more than any bloke on the planet, and has chased waves to all quarters of the globe like his life has depended on it, if not his livelihood.

Twenty six year old Maroubra surfer Mark Mathews has built a career on conquering the biggest, gnarliest slabs in the world. The man is fearless. He totally rules at Ours, Shipstern, Pipe and Jaws just to name a few extreme locations. He rips in anything from 2ft Dunny Bowl at the Bra, to 45 ft Jaws. He Last year he won the “Biggest Wave” in The Oakley Big Wave Awards, and was nominated in the top three best overall performers in the 2008 Billabong XXL Awards.

As a surfer he is just one of those larger than life characters, that all of us who work in surf mags and read surf mags just live to see. He’s just one of those guys that’s always in the spot. He’s like a super-hero in surfing.

1. Most embarrassing moment? First day at a new co-ed school my mate and I were at the back of the class he waited till it was really quite to let one rip when all the girls turned around disgusted he quickly blamed it on me
