SHARK IN SANTA CRUZ!!

great_white_shark
I was surfing a spot called Laguna’s yesterday afternoon. Laguna’s is about 15-20min drive from Steamer Lane. I surfed with Luke Munro Dion Attkinson and Jarred howse. We were the only ones out, It was cold, overcast and the water was really dark and murkey. Not only that but there was so much sea life around Seals, sea Birds diving for fish. It was just really eerie. Munners and i started talking about sharks and i was getting really freaked out. Munners was like you never really hear of sharks round here ay? Its pretty sweet. We were sitting furthest out of a little reef section and i was just over it too spooked so i went in and ran up the beach to surf with Dion and Jarred. Being from SA sharks just dont really faze them. I started to feel comfortable getting a few waves then out of the corner of my eye i seen a little splash of grey about 10 feet from me. i freaked but just thought surely its just a seal?  it probably was just a seal but out of instinct i still paddled inside of Dion putting him between me and what ever it was hahah. We all caught a few more waves each then  Eric Geiselman and a few other guys paddled out. The waves were pretty shitty so we all bailed. Later that night we heard a big shark had shot up out of the dark water straight into Eric snapping his board in half! From what i heard, after snapping Eric’s board the shark just disappeared and Eric went in with out a scratch on him. Pretty damn lucky! No more surfing at Laguna’s for me! click below for a shot of Eric’s board.

PB050002-1Must of been a pretty big shark?? Look closely  next to the fin on the right you can see the dent where the shark hit.

IMG_2813You’d think one of the the worlds most efficient predator’s could tell the difference between us right?  This shot is at steamer lane were the Final event of the Oneill Cold Water Series is on at the moment. Gonna be kinda spooky in heats! Check out the comp at   http://www.oneill.com/cwc/california/webcast

Ahh, freaky tale. I was out at that spot about a year ago one afternoon. All alone, just having a shitty work week and decided to go surf somewhere desolate to get my mind right. I was out about 15 minutes and started getting vibed. All the sudden I just felt hunted, really wierd. I paddled straight in and sat on the beach for an hour. I never paddled back out there. Instincts are there for a reason. Glad nobody is hurt.
